Owlbear Egg is a consumable item that can be traded with merchants for gold or used to cook meals in Baldur’s Gate 3. During Act 1 of the game, you will encounter the mighty Owlbear, protecting her only cub and her last egg.
In Baldur’s Gate 3, you can acquire an Owlbear’s egg in multiple ways. However, the main question remains: What should you do with this unique item? Do you want to keep it, hoping one day it will hatch? Or are you strapped short of gold? Maybe you are just hungry enough to have one last great meal? These are some of the possibilities we will discuss below.
How to get the Owlbear Egg in Baldur’s Gate 3
Owlbear Egg is an early-game item that can only be obtained from an Owlbear’s nest. During the game’s first act, go to the North of the Blighted Village to find the entrance to the cave (X: 90. Y: 445). Upon passing an arcana check, this cave will be revealed as an Owlbear Nest.
Owlbear’s Egg can be found near the western end of the cave (X: -357, Y: -111). Two ways exist to complete Owlbear Cave and obtain an Owlbear’s egg. Fight with Owlbear and defeat her to collect her egg as a reward.
Or use the Hide option to enter stealth. Crouch around Owlbear and collect the egg from the nest. Your best option is to use the Invisibility spell. This way, you can make your way out of the cave without making a commotion.
What to do with the Owlbear Egg in Baldur’s Gate 3
We didn’t want to break your heart, but the Owlbear Egg in Baldur’s Gate 3 doesn’t hatch. You can sit on it (not literally) for as long as you want, but you will never get a cute mini owlbear.

We decided to keep the Owlbear Egg until Act 3 to prove the theory and ended up selling it.
To get an owlbear cub, you must spare the cub’s life in the cave where you found the egg and later try to get it by talking to Krolla at the Goblin Camp. The Owlbear Egg has the following uses in Baldur’s Gate 3.
You can give the Owlbear Egg to Lady Esther near Trielta Crags and convince her it is the Githyanki Egg she was looking for. This will help you complete the Steal a Githyanki Egg side quest hassle-free.
You can attempt to cook the owlbear egg into a meal, enlisting yourself in the Hall of Fame for having the costliest meal in the history of Baldur’s Gate 3.
Owlbear Egg can also be fed to Owlbear Cub when he reaches your camp and asks for food. If you don’t have anything else, your character will give him the Owlbear egg. This happens off-screen, and the Owlbear Egg will disappear from your inventory.
The best course of action here is to sell the egg to a merchant. An owlbear egg sells for a minimum of 350 gold and a maximum of 750 gold. To sell this egg at the maximum value, make sure to visit a merchant you have a high affinity with (if you have traded with them a lot in the past). 750 gold is a massive amount early in the game; this is the only option you should go with.
One more thing you can do with an Owlbear Egg is to use it as a camp supply. It is listed in your inventory’s camp supply menu option and grants 40 camp supplies (enough for one long rest) when used.
