Prince of Persia Review Roundup – Nostalgic Return To Form

Prince of Persia is one of Ubisoft’s oldest and most valuable IPs. Following a long hiatus, the studio announced Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown last year but was met with dislikes and outrage initially.

On the contrary, impressions from the press were quite positive, which has also translated over to the final reviews. The game’s review embargo has just been lifted, leading to a score of 87/100 on Metacritic.

Why it matters: The Prince of Persia franchise has been left dormant since 2010, making this release a big deal for Ubisoft and its legacy IP.

The game received an average score of 87 based on 37 critics’ reviews at the time of writing. The following are some of the scores:

  • IGN – 8/10
  • VGC – 8/10
  • Xbox Era 9.5/10
  • AOTF – 10/10
  • GameGrin – 10/10

The combination of platforming, Metroidvania elements, and a solid combat system has won the hearts of many critics.

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is not only satisfying to control and play, but the game is also quite stylish in its presentation. A bold art style, flashy animations, and gorgeous cinematics are a few of the major highlights.

The game even offers 4K 120FPS gameplay on the Xbox Series X and PS5, and the main story takes around 20-25 hours to complete. These elements ensure the game looks sharp and runs smoothly while offering plenty of content.

While this sidescroller includes a compelling narrative, the game fails to stick the landing, slightly missing the mark. Still, this is a massive win for Ubisoft, becoming the studio’s best-rated release compared to recent AAA titles like Assassin’s Creed Mirage and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora.

While fans had doubts about a return to the 2.5D sidescrolling format for Prince of Persia, Ubisoft has exceeded all expectations.

Meanwhile, a remake based on Prince of Persia: Sands of Time is also in development, with the developer recently assuring fans that rapid progress was being made on the project.

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is the perfect release to keep fans engaged till the Sands of Time Remake. It blends the nostalgia of this IP and takes it in a new direction, thanks to a focused approach in a 2D sidescrolling environment.
