This article covers a developing story. Continue to check back with us as we will be adding more information as it becomes available.
Pokemon has had plenty of spinoffs over the years, but you'll struggle to find any more beloved than the Mystery Dungeon series. Alongside offering a unique Pokemon experience in the form of a dungeon crawler, the series often has the best personifications of Pokemon in general, telling great stories and giving them more unique personalities than just being glorified animals that say their own names a lot.
It all began with Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team, a peak that developer Spike Chunsoft has struggled to match with later titles, only really getting there with Explorers of Sky. Unfortunately, the best way to experience Red Rescue Team (we don't count the remake) was on very old hardware, but that's no longer the case, as Nintendo has announced that the title is coming to Nintendo Switch Online later this month.
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team will officially hit the service next week on August 9, though you'll need to make sure you're a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack member to actually be able to play it. The standard version only allows you to play NES and Game Boy games, while the expanded version throws Nintendo 64 and Game Boy Advance games in there too. Since Red Rescue Team launched on the Game Boy Advance, that's the one you'll need.
What's The Future Of Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Looking Like?
Now that we can easily go back to the roots of the Mystery Dungeon franchise, that should help pass the time until we get a new game. You have to go all the way back to 2015 with the release of Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon for the last original game in the series, and it should be considered a crime that we've had to wait almost a decade for a new one.
Unfortunately, there haven't been many signs of that wait ending any time soon, though there was a little bit of hope last year after Spike Chunsoft's name was found in the backend of a website that was set up shortly before Pokemon Day, though it turned out to be nothing. Of course, that doesn't mean we're not getting one, and a new Mystery Dungeon could act as a great gap filler between now and the launch of the next Nintendo Switch. Yes, this is cope, and I'm not ashamed to admit it.
