The Iron Flask is a peculiar item in Baldur’s Gate 3 that holds a scary enemy. Of all the strange items, this one is dangerous if used without precautions. You can obtain this flask at the cost of angering a whole faction and betraying their trust
This guide will explain how to obtain the Iron Flask in Baldur’s Gate 3 and make the best use of it. Before proceeding, we would like to clarify that, unlike DnD 5e rules, you can’t reuse the Iron Flask to capture a creature, even if its description says so.
Iron Flask location in Baldur’s Gate 3
The Iron Flask can be looted from a locked chest (X: 41, Y: 628) inside the cave on the Risen Road. Cross a broken bridge northeast of the Blighted Village to reach this area.
Follow the dead hyenas until you meet their leader, Flind. Hijack the illithid parasite in her mind to make her kill her party and then eat herself. Talk to Rugan inside the cave to start the Find the Missing Shipment side quest.
He has a treasure chest that must be delivered to Zhentarim Hideout. You can forcefully take it or deceive the party into handing it to you. Once you have it, unlock it with a lockpick to obtain the Iron Flask.

We recommend against opening the chest to obtain an Iron Flask. It is not worth it, and you will miss a whole dungeon and associated quests.
How to use the Iron Flask in Baldur’s Gate 3
The Iron Flask is locked with a cork; you can examine it by right-clicking it from the inventory menu (I button). Once you open or throw the flask, a level 5 spectator will emerge. This hostile enemy will attack you instantly.
Spectator is a very difficult boss fight in the game’s early sections. It also doesn’t give you any rewards. So, we recommend keeping the Iron Flask for the other scenarios mentioned below.
- The best use of the Iron Flask is inside the Adamantine Forge against Grym. Grym is a level 10 boss who will make your life miserable. Throw the Iron Flask as Grym attacks you. The Spectator will turn on Grym, and you will have a better chance of surviving the encounter.
- Use it against the other spectator in the Underdark while you focus on the humanoid enemies.
- You can take it to Act 3 to use it against Orin and Gortash.
- Our personal favorite was to use it against the inquisitor in Githyani Creche. This is the most brutal fight, followed by another one against the Githyanki commander immediately.
- You can practically use the Iron Flask against any enemies you struggle with. However, this is a one-time-use item, so be very careful.
While we recommend taking the treasure chest to Zarys to obtain Harold as a reward, don’t open it if you still obtained the Iron Flask. Just throw it against your enemies or create havoc in a gathering. Whatever floats your boat.
