Bethesda Is Playing Through

The Elder Scrolls series turns 30 today, and to celebrate, Bethesda confirms that, yes, the next game does exist. In fact, devs are playing through "early builds" of The Elder Scrolls 6, so there's at least something there resembling a game after all this time.

This comes almost six years since The Elder Scrolls 6 was revealed with a vague teaser, with no other trailers shared since then. Updates have been few and far between, so it's reassuring to hear that devs have something to play through – even if the game is still in the early stages of development after all this time.

"It's been 30 years since the beginning of this incredible journey through Tamriel with the launch of The Elder Scrolls: Arena," reads the anniversary post. It goes over all of the installments in The Elder Scrolls series, before getting to the future instalment that we're all eager for information on.

"Last but not least, yes, we are in development on the next chapter- The Elder Scrolls VI," reads the post. "Even now, returning to Tamriel and playing early builds has us filled with the same joy, excitement, and promise of adventure."

This might not be the substantial update that fans were hoping for, but at this point, it's expected. So many other anniversaries and Bethesda-centric showcases have come and gone without anything The Elder Scrolls 6-related, so the team is certainly taking its time on the sequel.

At the very least, Starfield is now with us, so that should free up some time to work on the next Elder Scrolls game. We also know that we won't get Fallout 5 until The Elder Scrolls 6 has launched, and Bethesda already has story ideas for that, so that should hopefully mean that the latter isn't too far away.

We haven't had a mainline Elder Scrolls game since Skyrim in 2011. Over the years, it's been ported to pretty much every platform available. It's still receiving updates too, although this is frustrating the playerbase greatly since it messes up any mods that are installed – and Skyrim fans play with a lot of mods. For their sake, here's hoping that Bethesda will slow these updates down even further, and put more of its effort into The Elder Scrolls 6.
