Here are all the top Microsoft Excel features released in September 2025

By Mike Davis 10/03/2025

Microsoft adds a plethora of new features to Excel and many other Microsoft 365 applications every month. And the best part is that those additions don't go unnoticed, as the software giant highlights each one of them in dedicated posts. September was no exception, as the company published a list of new features it introduced to Excel throughout September.

However, features released in September aren't available for everyone, as not all Excel clients gained new functionalities in September. For example, its official announcement doesn't include anything new for Android users. On the flip side, Excel web, Windows, and iOS users received plenty of new features last month.

What's new in Excel for Windows, Mac, iOS, and the web

If you're a Copilot licensed customer and a Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscriber, Microsoft has launched an early preview of what it calls "Agentic Mode" in Excel for the web. As per Microsoft's description, this new feature delivers an AI that can "speak Excel" natively. It simply means that it can perform a variety of spreadsheet tasks if you enter the right prompt, from producing new sheets to creating data visualizations. Microsoft has plans to release this feature for the Excel desktop client in the future, though the company didn't specify the date.

Microsoft added one more AI feature to Excel in September 2025 to make formula writing easier. Dubbed as Formula completion with Copilot in Excel, the new feature analyzes your workbook and then suggests and autocompletes formulas when you type "=". This is available for web users and Insiders on Windows.

If you're an Insider on Windows, you also have a new Python Initialization Editor, which will allow you to customize how Python starts up, 'view and modify the default initialization script,' 'add your own imports,' 'functions,' or 'logic,' and 'undo or reset' changes if needed. Again, there is no word on when this will be available for general users.

Microsoft also has something new for Insiders on iOS. If you're using the Microsoft 365 Copilot app for iOS, you can now share a file with Copilot, and it'll give you summaries, answers, and intelligent suggestions instantly. You can create an Excel file simply by sharing text from other files using Copilot chat. However, this is currently limited to iPhone users, with iPad users expected to get it by the end of this year.

These are all the new features Microsoft added to Excel in September 2025, and hopefully, it will continue the trend by releasing another set of handy new features to Excel this month. Rest assured, we'll keep you updated about all the important new features it adds to Excel in October and beyond.
